Mila Kunis on the cover of W Magazine - March 2011

Venus de Mila

Mila Kunis, the Ukrainian-born star of “Black Swan,” talks about coming to America—and why she’ll never dance again.

March 2011

Lynn Hirschberg: In Black Swan, you play the wild-child devil girl. You’re both seductive and scary. Had you danced before you took the part?

Mila Kunis: I had never danced in my life. I trained for four months, seven days a week, five hours a day. I had one day off on my birthday. I lost 20 pounds. I tore a ligament. I dislocated my shoulder. I have two scars on my back. And it was worth every minute.

But I will never dance again. I’m a strong believer in mind over matter, but I didn’t fully understand what that meant until this production. I was like, Well—I wear heels; I can do this. I was wrong: Christian Louboutins are uncomfortable, but I screamed the first time I put on a pointe shoe.

You have previously been known for comedy. Do you think it’s difficult for women to be considered both beautiful and funny in Hollywood?
I was never raised to think that I was pretty. It’s not that I was raised to think I was unattractive, but it was just never something that was pointed out to me by my family. They would point out personality traits—“Our daughter is really quirky”—versus what I look like, because inevitably, looks go, so it makes no difference.

Your family is Ukrainian. How old were you when you moved to America?
I was seven and a half when we moved to the States. We came straight to Los Angeles.

What was the first thing you remember seeing of America?
A black man. It was at the American embassy [in Moscow], and all I had known were Caucasian people with blond hair, brunette hair, and sometimes red hair. You’re never really taught about anything else. I think I was frightened. And the beautiful thing was, the man spoke Russian. He explained to me that there are people in this world who are of different color. Being seven and a half, I asked him, “Does that mean there are purple people in this world?”

Shortly after arriving in L.A., you began acting. Did you always long to be an actress?
No. I started acting when I was nine as a hobby because it was fun, and it allowed me to get out of school. The first thing I did was a Barbie commercial, and I got to keep the Barbie. That’s all a kid wants.

From nine to 14, I did close to 15 commercials, and I guest starred on just about every television show. I was on Baywatch twice. The second time, I played a blind girl who’s lost in the forest next to the beach and needs to be saved. It was absurd: There’s a fire, I get saved, and then I go boogie-boarding. I remember thinking, Well, if I’m blind, how am I boogie-boarding? No one ever gave me an answer.

Was there a moment when you decided to be more discerning and selective in your roles?
I didn’t really think of acting as a career. I’m the first person in my family to not be a college graduate. I always associate careers with college diplomas. When I was 22, my contract with That ’70s Show ended, and I had to make a conscious decision about what I wanted to do with my life. During the show, I had attempted to go to college, but I realized that the traffic in L.A. made it too difficult for me to go to school at 6 a.m. and be back at work at 10 a.m. I asked my parents if it was okay if I dropped out. They said okay, you can defer until after your contract with That ’70s Show ends.

Halle Berry talks to Ebony Magazine about her daughter

'I feel like she's black': Halle Berry on the daughter caught in middle of bitter war of words with Gabriel Aubry. Halle Berry has said she considers her daughter Nahla, who is at the center of a bitter custody battle, to be 'black'.Her comment emerged a week after the fight between Berry and her ex boyfriend Gabriel Aubry over the two-year-old turned ugly.It was alleged by multiple sources that the French-Canadian model once used a racial slur against the actress, calling her a 'n*****.'
Berry, 44, says: 'I feel like she's black. I'm black and I'm her mother and I believe in the one-drop theory.' The 'one-drop theory' refers to the controversial racial classification of African-Americans that determined who was black in the US.

Although it was only made law in the early 20th century for decades before that it was used in some states to determine who was black, regardless of how many white ancestors they had or even if they looked Caucasian.

It varied from state to state but sometimes even if someone had one great-great grandparent that was black and the rest of their ancestors were white, they were still considered black.

When asked to define her daughter's race, Berry - who has both white and African-American heritage - tells Ebony:

''What I think is that that's something she's going to have to decide.'I'm not going to put a label on it. I had to decide for myself and that's what she's going to have to decide - how she identifies herself in the world.'And I think, largely, that will be based on how the world identifies her. That's how I identified myself.'But I feel like she's black.'

Berry says that she struggled to determine her own racial identity. Her parents had a turbulent relationship and, while being raised by her white mother, the actress sees herself as being black.

Jennifer Aniston Photoshoot *Allure Magazine* February 2011

Showing off her flirty side, Jennifer Aniston is giving all the guys plenty to drool over in the February 2011 issue of Allure magazine. The “Rumor Has It” actress poses in an unbuttoned pajama top while holding a teddy bear and making a pouty face. And in the accompanying interview, Jen gives her reaction to everything from her hairstyle during “Friends” to her amusement over “The Bachelor.”

Aniston declared, "Let's just say there have been moments I'd rather not relive, like that whole Rachel thing. I love Chris [McMillan, her hairstylist], and he's the bane of my existence at the same time because he started that damn Rachel, which was not my best look. How do I say this? I think it was the ugliest haircut I've ever seen. What I really want to know is, how did that thing have legs?"

As for “The Bachelor,” she mused, "I was mesmerized by these girls, they meet this guy, they have three dates together or something, and they're weeping as though they've just lost the love of their life. I don't understand that."

Diane Lane Covers *Ladies Home Journal* October 2010

After marrying Josh Brolin in 2004, Diane Lane made a 911 call that ultimately resulted in Josh’s arrest on a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery. Diane, who didn’t press charges, doesn’t comment on the incident.

But the 45-year-old actress opens up about their relationship in the new issue of Ladies’ Home Journal.

“At my own peril I will quote Mae West, who said, ‘Getting married is like trading in the adoration of many for the sarcasm of one,’” she says, laughing. “I embrace that. Bring it on. Because that’s what intimacy is: It’s a willingness to be vulnerable, a willingness to bite my tongue and a willingness to set an example of what I believe in. And it’s hard. Look at all of the sages throughout history. They lived alone.”

Diane insists the compromise that comes with marriage is worth it. “I recently said to Josh, ‘Being in a relationship makes it impossible to avoid yourself.’ It may not always make me comfortable but it sure has made me a better person. And I’ll take that any day.”

Nina Dobrev in Saturday Night Magazine

SNMag: What initially drew you to the show and the character of Elena?
Nina Dobrev: Well, I remember reading it and just being drawn to the fact that she was this average girl who was damaged in many ways and then I did some research and found out that I would probably end up having to play Katherine too, who is the complete opposite. This is one of the rarest, coolest opportunities in television, to play two people on the same medium.

SNMag: What can you tell us about Katherine coming back at the end of the finale last season?
ND: The only thing I can really tell you is that she’s back, and if I told you any more I’d have to kill you or bite you or something. But, yeah, she is back and you can just imagine now that she’s back in action things are just going to get more and more intense. It’s fun to see what she is going to do because she is just so spontaneous and crazy, but I’m just as in the dark as you are because they don’t tell us anything until we get there.

Lindsay Lohan Pre-Jail/Rehab Interview Now in *Vanity Fair* October 2010 Issue

Lindsay Lohan graces the October 2010 issue of Vanity Fair, on stands Sept. 7. Here’s what the 24-year-old shared during her interview, which took place before she headed to jail:

On her supposed alcohol addiction: “If I were the alcoholic everyone says I am, then putting a [scram] bracelet on would have ended me up in detox, in the emergency room, because I would have had to come down from all the things that people say I’m taking and my father says I’m taking — so that says something, because I was fine.”

On denying drug abuse: “I’ve never abused prescription drugs. I never have — never in my life. I have no desire to. That’s not who I am. I’ve admitted to the things that I’ve done — to, you know, dabbling in certain things and trying things ’cause I was young and curious and thought it was like, O.K., ’cause other people were doing it and other people put it in front of me. And I see what happened in my life because of it.”

On hanging out with the wrong crowd: “So many people around me would say they cared for the wrong reasons. A lot of people were pulling from me, taking from me and not giving. I had a lot of people that were there for me for, you know, the party.”

On her father, Michael Lohan: “I think if anyone should be looked at medically it’s him. He has such a big chemical imbalance at this point because of all the things he’s done to himself. … The worst part of it is you turn around and you see your dad crying and normally you’d be, like, happy that your father’s there. But then he has to go and do an interview right after.”

On her career being far from over: “I want my career back. I know that I’m a damn good actress, and it’s been my passion since I was a child, and I know that when I care about something, I put 100 percent and more into it. … I want the respect that I had when I was doing great movies. And if that takes not going out to a club at night, then so be it. It’s not fun anyway. I don’t care. It’s the same thing every time.”
